Importance of scientific storage systems
Harvesting of crop is seasonal, but consumption of food grain is continuous.
The market value of the produce is generally low at harvesting time.
So the grower need storage facility to hold a portion of
produce to sell surplus produce when the marketing price is favourable.
Traders and Co-operatives at market centres need storage
structures to hold grains when the transport facility is inadequate.
Fruits and Vegetables need storage till they are processed
Importance of Scientific storage (Example’s)
Scenario 1
It is estimated that out of the total production of 41 lakh tonnes of onion, 40-50 per cent valued at more than Rs 600 cr are lost due to desiccation, decay and sprouting in storage.
This results in raise in their price to the tune of four to five times when they are in short supply
• Scenario 2.
Bulk inflow of tomato and absence of scientific
storage, makes farmers no choices but, to sell
their produce at throw away prices or unload the
produce in the middle of the road to avoid
transportation charges.
